EARLY YEARS 1 - 3

The Early Years (EY) class provides a wonderful introduction to learn and build socialisation abilities through play.

Classroom teachers ensure the environment is warm, friendly and vibrant. Appealing visually to the world of young children, an emphasis on wood and tactile soft furnishings have been selected to create a soothing environment; the intention being to create spaces for deep, uninterrupted play to occur. Children learn English through guided and self directed play within the room, songs, and role play.

A strong Personal Social Health Education programme underpins the learning experiences. In this language

rich environment children develop self-regulation, independence and resilience.

The EY Teams are invested in developing skills and competencies in the following areas:

English Speaking and Listening, Mark Making, Pre Math, Fine Motor Skills, Art Play, Sensory Learning, Small World and Dramatic Play.

Additionally, EY have specialist classes in Personal Social Health Education (P.S.H.E), Music, Art, German and Physical Education.

Fully Integrated

A fully integrated part of the Lower School, the Early Years Programme (EY) encourages learning through a hands-on, inquiry-based approach.

Early Years are Vital Years

The early years are vital years in children’s lives as they develop and consolidate many skills. Children in the Early Years Programme are grouped according to age as follows:

EYP 1: ages 3 to 4
EYP 2: ages 4 to 5
EYP 3: ages 5 to 6

Develop at their own pace

Students at the International School of Ulm/ Neu-Ulm are able to develop at their own pace in an environment that stimulates and encourages learning through exploration and inquiry.

The programme is English language-based, with an emphasis on songs, poems, finger-plays, and activities in which language plays an integral part. Additionally, we introduce basic mathematical concepts such as shape, space, and number in context.

Our Early Years

Preparing young learners for grade one, we place a high priority on social interaction with groups enjoying free play, creative art, and many opportunities for communication.

All EY classes are part of the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and EY students are required to study four of the six Transdisciplinary Themes, exploring all their questions through play and discovery.

Children in EY also have P.E. “physical education” and library lessons during the week, while EY 3 also has scheduled German lessons. EY students also take part in Lower School activities, programmes, assemblies, special exhibitions, displays, and field trips.

All three EY classes are actively involved with the child’s emotional and social development. We emphasize skills, which will help your child to become an independent young learner. We also aim to develop caring, respectful students who have a life-long love of learning.
